TRCM SWOAS Contest
What the hell is a SWOAS contest?... Way back when, Lanny Shorts, who owned Standard Hobbies stores in Lodi and Stockton, was a founder and HUGE supporter of TRCM. Lanny thought that a fun, relaxed, easy, entry level contest would perhaps get some rc flyers interested in scale flying competitions. After careful consideration he came up with the now famous SWOAS event. Stand Way Off And Squint! Traditionally scale models are minutely examined and judged as to authenticity to the real aircraft: how scale it is. In Lanny's SWOAS scale contest, the rc aircraft is judged from 25' away and the judge squints to determine how scale it is. Yes, the SWOAS scale judging is very lax, intentionally. Rember, the whole point of a SWOAS was to get flyers interested in scale events. Waley's SWOAS Fun Contest Rules 1) Pilot can enter any kind/type of model aircraft, the pilot then designates what type of aircraft the model will be representing. 2) There will be one or two flight lines (depending on the number of entrants) with two judges at each flight line. 3) Each pilot will be required to fly a minimum of three rounds (flights) with a maximum of four rounds depending on time and the number of entrants. 4) Each pilot entered will be given a score sheet and pilot number prior to each round (flight), the pilot will present the score sheet to the judges prior to engine start, failure to do so the judge has an option of either stepping on the aircraft to prevent engine start or the pilot will be given a big ZERO and will not be allowed to fly that round. 5) The score sheet will have the following: a) pilots name b) type of aircraft represented c) category: military or civilian d) entry level: beginners/sportsman and everyone else 6) Accuracy of scale, and judging will be done 20 feet back from the aircraft 7) Flight score and maneuvers require 60 points, judging of accuracy of scale prior to flight 10 points: a) accuracy of scale, done before flight 10 points b) take-off 10 points c) flat figure eight for advanced/expert pilots, flat circle for beginners/sportsmen 10 points d) fly-by: slow for advanced/experts, any speed for beginners/sportsmen (just as long they are in control!!) 10 points e) pilots option (ie: a military roll) 10 points f) landing whether in control or not 10 points g) realism of flight (the total flight from take-off to landing) 10 points 8) Scoring example: flight #1: 60 points flight#2: 60 points *flight#3: 30 points flight#4: 60 points The lowest score (*flight #3) is dropped, adding up the other flight scores along with the accuracy of scale points to come up with the total score. Example: flight score (3 rounds with the lowest dropped) 180 points + accuracy of scale 10 points total: 190 points. |
